Staff Augmentation vs Dedicated Team: 7-Point Comparison

Staff augmentation adds engineers to your team who take direction from your own lead. A dedicated team is a group a vendor assembles and runs for your product alone, usually with its own project manager. The model Empiric Infotech runs sits between the two: remote developers who work only for you and take direction from you every day, with a senior team lead who reviews and tests every release, at $2,000 a month per developer (EUR 2,000 in the UK and Europe, AUD $3,000 in Australia).

That middle model is what our remote staff augmentation services are. This page explains the two market models it borrows from, so you can tell which one your situation needs.

The short answer

  • Staff augmentation: you rent individual engineers and manage them yourself. It fits when you already have a lead with time to review every pull request.
  • Dedicated team: the vendor supplies and organises a whole team for your product. It fits when you need several roles at once and nobody in-house has time to run them.
  • The difference that matters is who runs the day. Notice periods, invoices and start times all follow from that one row.
  • Cost: Accelerance's 2026 rate figures put agency developers at $24 to $76 an hour, junior to senior, across Asia, Europe and Latin America, which is $3,840 to $12,160 a month at 160 hours. A dedicated team adds the vendor's management seats on top. Empiric Infotech charges a flat $2,000 per developer.
  • Rule of thumb: if you can write the next four weeks of tickets and review the code, augment. If you cannot, pay for a team, or for developers with review built in.

What is staff augmentation?

Staff augmentation means renting individual engineers who join your existing team and take direction from your managers. The vendor handles employment, payroll and replacement. You handle everything about the work: the backlog, the standup, the code review and the definition of done.

It works when the gap is hands, not leadership. You have a tech lead, a roadmap and a process, and you are two backend developers short for the next year. It breaks when the gap is leadership: augmented engineers follow the direction they get, and without it, work drifts.

Every augmentation contract also sets a minimum term, a start date and a notice period, and all three vary by vendor. Read them before the rate.

What is a dedicated team?

A dedicated team is a group of engineers, usually with a project manager and sometimes a designer, that a vendor assembles to work only on your product for months or years. You own the roadmap and set priorities. The vendor's manager organises the daily work, keeps the team staffed and reports to you.

The unit you pay for is the team, not the person. You get a whole capability at once, and you pay for every seat, often including the seats that manage the others. For the roles a team usually contains and when the model fits, see what a dedicated development team is.

Seven rows decide how the arrangement feels by month three. The first two columns describe the market, where terms vary by contract, so check yours. The third column is our standing contract, on the same terms in every region.

Which one costs less over 12 months?

Per engineer, the two market models cost about the same, because both are built on the same agency rates. The difference is what sits around the engineers: a dedicated team bills the vendor's management seats, and augmentation spends your lead's time instead, which never appears on an invoice.

Here is a three-developer, twelve-month example on Accelerance's 2026 rate figures. Accelerance publishes junior and senior rates but no mid-level band, so each range runs from junior to senior, and a mid-level developer sits inside it.

Accelerance's numbers are survey ranges, and the vendor you speak to will quote its own. Our developers are mid to senior level, with a senior lead reviewing their work, so read the gap as a range rather than a like-for-like saving. Only the last row is a fixed, published price.

When is staff augmentation the better choice?

  • You have a tech lead with real time every week to review pull requests.
  • Your process already works: written tickets, continuous integration, a definition of done.
  • You need a specific skill for a defined stretch, say six months of mobile work, inside a team that is otherwise complete.
  • You want the new engineers inside your existing team culture, not beside it.

When is a dedicated team the better choice?

  • You need several roles at once and nobody in-house can coordinate them.
  • The work is a whole product or module with a clean boundary.
  • You would rather pay for management than supply it yourself.
  • The engagement will last long enough, a year or more, for a team to build its own rhythm.

What sits between staff augmentation and a dedicated team?

The model in the middle is for a common situation: a team with a product owner but no spare senior engineer. Pure augmentation would hand that owner a code review load they cannot carry. A full vendor team would take the daily direction away from them. So the engagement keeps direction with you and review with us.

In practice, you start with one developer and add more at the same flat rate. You write the tickets and run the standup. A senior team lead reviews and tests every release before it reaches you. The developer works within 09:30 to 19:30 IST, which shares 5 to 7 hours with the UK and Europe and 2.5 to 3.5 hours with Sydney afternoons. For US clients, a project manager covers your morning, available until 22:30 IST, about 1:00 PM Eastern (noon in winter), and development runs overnight. The first seven days are a risk-free trial, and the code, repository and accounts are yours from day 0.

How do you choose between staff augmentation and a dedicated team?

  1. Can someone on your side write the next four weeks of tickets today? If not, fix that first, or choose a dedicated team whose manager will help shape them.
  2. Does that person have time to review every pull request? If not, choose a dedicated team, or dedicated developers with review built in.
  3. Will the work last at least six months? If not, a fixed-scope project may fit better. The trade-offs are in staff augmentation vs outsourcing.
  4. Do you need more than one role at the same time? If yes, and nobody can coordinate them, a dedicated team earns its management seats.
  5. How fast can you stop if it is not working? Read the notice period before the rate. A 90-day notice period means a bad fit costs three months of fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dedicated team the same as staff augmentation?

No. In staff augmentation you manage individual engineers inside your own team. In a dedicated team the vendor organises a whole team around your roadmap. Managed services is a third model, where the vendor owns an outcome; the three are compared in staff augmentation vs managed services.

Which costs less, staff augmentation or a dedicated team?

Per engineer they are close, because both use agency rates. A dedicated team adds the vendor's management seats; augmentation adds your own lead's time. Empiric Infotech's flat $2,000 per developer includes senior review and project management, so neither cost is added on top.

Can I start with one developer and grow into a team?

Yes. Start with one dedicated developer at $2,000 a month and add developers at the same flat rate as the work proves itself. The same senior team lead reviews everything the team ships.

Who owns the code in each model?

Whoever the contract says. Get the IP assignment in writing before work starts, and make sure the repository and cloud accounts are in your company's name from the first day. At Empiric Infotech the NDA and IP assignment are signed on day 0 and developers commit to your repository, using your accounts.

How is either model different from outsourcing?

Outsourcing hands the plan to the vendor and pays for an outcome. Staff augmentation and dedicated teams both keep the plan with you and pay for capacity. That line, and when outsourcing is the right answer, is covered in staff augmentation vs outsourcing.

Where should you start?

If you have a lead with time to review, augment. If you need a whole capability and someone to run it, pay for a dedicated team. If you have a product owner but not a spare senior engineer, the middle model is built for you: start with one dedicated remote developer on a seven-day trial, or read how the full remote staff augmentation engagement runs.
